Asbestos Mining and South Africa – Unclosed Mines

This January 2010 article from South Africa reports on this new auditor general report raising major issues regarding failed clean up of mines, including old asbestos mines. As to asbestos mines, it says:

  1. Abandoned asbestos mines constitute 3,84% of the total population of abandoned mines. As at April 2008 there were 144 asbestos mines: 45,83% had been rehabilitated, 8,33% had been partially rehabilitated and 45,83% had not been rehabilitated. The status of asbestos mines in the different provinces of South Africa is illustrated in graph 1.
